PSC Announces Next Generation of Scanning Products; Three New Products Introduced.
DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 21, 2003
PSC Inc. (OTCBB: PSCX), a global provider of integrated data-collection products and services for the retail supply chain, today unveiled three new products at the Marketechnics tradeshow being held at the Dallas Convention Center in Dallas, Texas.
QUICKcheck(TM) - Next Generation Self-Checkout, a completely new system that "evolutionizes" self-checkout for the retail sector. The self-checkout system provides "best of breed" configuration flexibility by enabling retailers to mix and match tendering and bagging modules as well as point-of-sale (POS) peripheral devices from other manufacturers to customize the system to meet their unique checkout needs. An available low-cost EFT only E-Pay unit offers retailers an additional option. Significantly reducing cashier interventions, QUICKcheck is the first-ever self-checkout system capable of offering "two-handed" customer scanning and able to automatically authorize and process checks in-lane. The compact QUICKcheck footprint allows retailers to save space and easily integrate the system into a store's existing layout. Its software, co-developed with Kyrus Corporation, offers operational transparency by seamlessly integrating with existing POS applications. Cash balancing and reporting processes are also the same as traditional cashier-assisted lanes. QUICKcheck also easily converts to a staffed checkout lane and back as traffic patterns demand.
Additionally, QUICKcheck was designed to simplify and speed self-checkout for consumers with voice-prompts, step-by-step instructions and accompanying illustrations. A Magellan 9500 "smart" scanner/scale with PSC SurroundScan(TM) technology also quickly reads bar codes on all six sides of an item simultaneously, making package orienting unnecessary. An optional scanner-integrated electronic article surveillance (EAS) deactivation unit assures that security tags have been deactivated when items are scanned, reducing failure to deactivate (FTD) occurrences, and the embarrassment shoppers experience when false security alarms go off. QUICKcheck will be available worldwide March 2003.
Magellan(R) 2200VS - Magellan 2200VS is the newest addition to PSC's "smart" point-of-sale scanner family designed to maximize retail checkout and supply chain speed and efficiency. A compact, vertical scanning solution for medium to high-volume POS applications, the Magellan 2200VS "smart" scanner is the highest performing scanner in its class and has the most aggressive scan pattern. Like other Magellan scanners, the 2200VS includes PSC's advanced FirstStrike(TM) decoding software, which enables the reading of torn, poorly printed, and disfigured labels, and supports all the major symbologies, including Reduced Space Symbology (RSS). The Magellan 2200VS is compliant with the requirements of the Uniform Code Council's Sunrise 2005 initiative, and supports all GTIN data structures. The scanner's many "smart" features expand its functionality beyond scanning. Productivity Index Reporting(TM) software identifies difficult to read bar codes that slows the checkout process. Diagnostic reporting software enables the scanner to report its status and health to a POS system. Flash memory enables easy software updates, including updates downloaded from the host system. It also includes an RS232 auxiliary port for connection of other devices at the point of sale, including handheld scanners. The Magellan 2200VS will be available worldwide March 31, 2003.
Falcon(R) PT40 the newest addition to PSC's popular Falcon PT family, the Falcon PT40 is an entry-level mobile data collection terminal that offers retailers a cost-effective, easy-to-use solution for performing numerous applications including cycle counting, shelf management, price management, and order entry. Designed specifically for retail-in-store and light industrial data entry and management applications, the Falcon PT40 is a shirt pocket-sized data collection device. Its integrated laser and large keys enable fast and accurate data entry. Every Falcon PT40 comes pre-loaded with multiple sample applications allowing the device to be used right out of the box. The included powerful Windows program generator allows users to quickly create advanced data collection applications suited to their particular needs. Up to two megabytes of memory allow storage and/or validation of more than 65,000 records, reducing downtime. The Falcon PT40 also supports double byte languages, including Chinese, providing access to an exploding market. Falcon PT40 will be available worldwide at the end of the first quarter 2003.
"This latest suite of scanning technology is a continuing demonstration of our ability to produce next-generation products that meet the complex needs within the retail sector," said Edward J. Borey, President and CEO of PSC Inc. "We are committed to arming retailers with innovative technology that enables them to increasingly maximize ROI and evolve the customer shopping experience."
