PROTEON FRAME RELAY CERTIFIED BY LEADING SERVICE PROVIDERS
WESTBOROUGH, Mass., March 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Proteon, Inc. (NASDAQ: PTON) today announced that its frame relay implementation for its bridging routers has successfully completed certification testing by WilTel, Motorola Codex, StrataCom and Netrix. Frame relay is the ANSI (American National Standards Institute) standard that enables network managers to build global, high-speed networks that cost-effectively support data-intensive transmission requirements.
Proteon's standards-based frame relay implementation, available on the CNX 500 and p4100-plus (see note) bridging routers, includes value-added features that provide unmatched wide-area network (WAN) access, network flexibility and economical transmission. Unique frame relay features include: congestion control for increased network availability; management capabilities including LMI and Annex D support to ensure interoperability with all standards-based and proprietary third-party frame relay implementations; and circuit access control for enhanced network security. Proteon's frame relay supports IP, DecNet IV, IPX, XNS, VINES, Source Routing Bridging, Spanning Tree Bridging and SRT protocols and complies with protocol encapsulation standard draft RFC No.1294.
"Interoperability with leading WAN service providers ensures that Proteon users will get optimal performance from frame relay applications," said Nate Kalowski, vice president of marketing at Proteon, Inc. "As a member of the Frame Relay Forum, Proteon firmly believes in standards compliance and is committed to delivering a proven, tested implementation to our frame relay customers."
Proteon's bridging routers have been certified by WilTel as compatible for operation with its WilPak nationwide frame relay service. In addition, Proteon products have been rigorously tested for frame relay interoperability and compatibility with a number of leading switch vendor products including Motorola Codex's 6290 T1/E1 Fast Packet Multiplexer, StrataCom's IPX Cell Relay T1/E1 Switch, and Netrix's No.1-ISS Integrated Switching System. Ongoing testing also is underway with AT&T, US Sprint, Northern Telecom, CompuServe and other international frame relay service providers.
"Telecommunications users today are familiar with the challenge of putting together networks that employ equiment and services from a variety of vendors. The ability to combine these devices into one seamless service is crucial," said Thomas Pickren, project leader for WilPak service at WilTel, Inc. "With a certification program like ours, customers can easily identify those devices that operate successfully with WilPak."
WilTel, based in Tulsa, Okla., is a full-service telecommunications company that offers data, voice and video-related products and services nationwide. WilTel owns and operates a nationwide digital fiber-optic network with access to more than 30,000 system miles and has sales and service offices across the country.
Motorola Codex, a subsidiary of Motorola Inc., is a leading supplier of network products and integrated network solutions. Offerings include network management systems, T1/E1 switches, X.25 networks, mulitplexers, modems, DSU/CSUs, LAN internetworking devices, and professional and systems integration services.
Stratacom -- based in San Jose, Calif. -- is the world's premier supplier of frame relay equipment. The company's IPX T1/E1 cell relay switches and frame relay interfaces are installed in private and public networks around the globe. Public networks employing StrataCom technology include AT&T, CompuServe, National Telecom (Canada), Telecom Finland and WilTel. To data, StrataCom has shipped more than 3,000 frame relay ports worldwide.
Netrix Corporation, headquartered near Washington, D.C. in Herndon, Va., is the only company to offer an integrated product combining frame relay networking, X.25 packet switching, and T1/E1 multiplexing in a single platform. Netrix products are currently installed in private networks supporting a wide range of applications, including LAN-WAN internetworking, retail point-of- sale, electronic mail, inter-bank transactions, and high-speed facsimile. In the public network arena, Netrix products serve as the backbone data switches for value-added networks in North America, Europe, Asia and Australia.
Headquartered in Westborough, Mass., Proteon, Inc. designs, manufactures and markets token ring networking and internetworking solutions. These physical networking systems allow an enterprise to simplify the integration of IBM and non-IBM systems into a single enterprise-wide network. The company's products -- token ring adapters and software drives, intelligent network concentrators, multi-protocol bridging routers and network management software -- together create an integrated, highly reliable token ring network infrastructure.
