PROTEON ANNOUNCES INTERNET RESELLER PROGRAM; EASY-TO-USE ROUTER TO BE SOLD BY SELECT RESELLERS

WESTBOROUGH, Mass., Nov. 30 ~PRNewswire~ -- Proteon, Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: PTON), a leading developer of token ring networking and internetworking products, today announced a new reseller program that enables select qualified resellers to sell and support the company's easy-to-use DNX 300i bridging router specifically developed for IBM networking environments, as well as the p4100+ bridging router designed for 16 Mbps multiprotocol internetworks. The InterNet Reseller Program is effective immediately and will be initially offered through two of Proteon's distributors, Ingram Micro and Tech Data.
The InterNet Reseller Program is the first program that enables national distributors and their resellers to easily, profitably sell bridging routers. Proteon-certified network professionals, on-site at the distributors, review each network design to ensure that the specifications for each bridging router order match the installation's requirements. This quality assurance enables resellers to avoid the pre-installation ordering issues that account for more than 90 percent of all network problems in third-party internetworking installations.
The program builds on Proteon's successful relationships with its distributor partners that market its ProNet-4~16 token ring network interface cards, Series 70 and Series 90 intelligent wiring hubs, and the OneView network management software product lines. Until now, the company's bridging router products lines were previously sold exclusively through system integrators, OEMs, and select VAR relationships.
"Because Proteon's 'Plug-N-Play' DNX 300i router is easy to install and maintain, the InterNet Reseller Program is ideally suited to distributors, resellers and their end users," said Tim Evans, Proteon channels marketing manager. "The DNXi's pre-configured interfaces and software specifically for IBM environments enable it to be sold off the shelf and installed in minutes -- unlike any other router on the market."
Enrolled InterNet Resellers receive a range of marketing, sales and support programs, including unlimited access to an on-line bulletin board, a marketing starter kit, product training services and materials, sales guides, technology spotlights and competitive updates. InterNet reseller marketing programs include incentives, such as the "Buy-One-Get-One-Free" router demonstration offer and a cooperative marketing program that matches each dollar resellers spend on marketing Proteon routers.
"The capability to sell Proteon's bridging routers will bolster our already growing business in the token ring market," said Amy Hoffman, Ingram Micro's director of marketing, technical products division. "The addition of routers to our inventory of Proteon products allow us to provide a complete solution for building enterprise wide networks -- from the NICs to the intelligent hubs and now the internetworking routers. With the growing demand for enterprise-wide-networks, customers look increasingly for integrated solutions like Proteon's."
"The addition of these products through the InterNet Reseller Program will strengthen our networking offering to meet our customers' needs," said Mark Pelletier, Tech Data's director of networking, product marketing division. "Proteon has developed an easy-to-install routing solution for remote and departmental IBM-oriented sites, and, in doing so has opened up this vast market to the channel. Our networking resellers will want to take advantage of this new opportunity."
The second member of the DNX300 Series, The DNX 300i provides a cost-effective multi-protocol bridging router to access a corporate-wide internetwork in a pure IBM SNA or mixed SNA environment. The DNXi has improved levels of performance over the LAN and LAN~WAN, full compatibility with IBM bridges, and is manageable via an SNMP manager or NetView. The DNX 300i supports both Ethernet or token ring LAN connections. And for wide area networks, it can be configured for use with PPP (Point to Point Protocol), Frame relay, X.25, T1 or E1 lines. Available now, the DNXi ranges in list price from $5,495 to $7,495 depending upon configuration.
To become certified as a Proteon InterNet reseller, resellers must fulfill basic qualification criteria and demonstrate a commitment to sell and support internetworking solutions.
Proteon's leadership in anticipating and delivering important technolodies ?the data communciations market has resi?n many inter networking firsts, including: the first multi-protocol router, the first interoperable FDDI implementation, the first standards-based implementations of OSPF abd SNMP, and the first support of 16 mbps token ring. Its expertise enables the company to provide tightly integrated, high-performance physical infrastructure.
