PROTEON ANNOUNCES AVAILABILITY OF DNX 300N BRIDGING ROUTER

WESTBOROUGH, Mass., May 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Proteon, Inc. (NASDAQ: PTON) has announced the availability of the DNX 300n Bridging Router, an affordable "plug-n-play" product designed for Novell users requiring low-cost access to remote Ethernet LANs running the Internet Packet eXchange (IPX) protocol.
The DNX 300n is the third model in a new family of internetworking products that includes the DNX 300m for multi-protocol remote sites and the DNX 300i for IBM environments. Since being first announced last summer, the DNX 300 series has gained widespread industry acceptance. In January, Data Communications magazine named the DNX 300m a "hot product" of the year.
"The DNX family has been well received in the marketplace," said Jay Bazzinotti, Proteon product manager. "Organizations can now provide remote departmental locations with the capabilities of a sophisticated router at very reasonable prices. The DNX 300n can be installed in 15 minutes or less without high-level technical support. We believe this product will play a significant role in addressing the overall needs of Novell connectivity."
In addition to its availability through Proteon's field sales force in collaboration with strategic partners, such as Digital Equipment Corporation, Racal Datacom and Motorola Codex, the DNX's award-winning ease-of-use capabilities enables Proteon to distribute the remote-site bridging routers through qualified resellers in its Internet Reseller Program. Since its introduction in November 1992, the Internet Reseller Program has attracted more than 100 resellers nation-wide with extensive distributor support from Tech Data Corp. and Ingram Micro. Future plans for the program include expansion into the Canadian and European reseller community.
"Our resellers have requested a router product that offers the best of all worlds -- ease of use, full features, and low costs," said Ello Levy, marketing director for the networking division at Tech Data Corp., HQ location, a leading distributor of personal computer products. "Proteon's DNX 300n product gives resellers what they have been asking for on all counts."
The DNX 300n is a 386-based router with flash memory and is available in two configurations, each complete with all the necessary software, hardware and cables. Each configuration has a fixed price (the only additional option is switched WAN Support). The DNX 300n supports 1 LAN to 1 LAN or 2 WANS to 1 LAN; and includes bridging and routing software.
All models in the DNX 300 family incorporate Proteon's Transportable Software Architecture (TSA) that delivers support for 18+ protocols and is based on more than 200 man years of development. Industry Standard protocol support includes TCP/IP, DECnet, Novell's IPX, XNS, OSI, VINES, Apollo Domain, and AppleTalk.
All protocols are managed through the industry-standard Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP). The DNX 300n supports Open Shortest Path First (OSPF), the dynamic routing protocol that provides greater efficiency and control over the routing of traffic in large, multi- vendor networks. Developed at Proteon, OSPF has been adopted as an industry standard.
The DNX 300n is available for immediate delivery, with prices ranging from $3,995 to $5,495, depending on configuration. Pricing of the DNX 300m and DNX 300i range from $4,995 to $6,495, depending on configuration.
