PROPOSED ACQUISITION BY ALCATEL CABLE OF NORTHERN TELECOM'S STC SUBMARINE SYSTEMS DIVISION REFERRED TO MONOPOLIES AND MERGERS COMMISSION IN THE UNITED KINGDOM

TORONTO, Oct. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Northern Telecom issued the following press notice that was released in the United Kingdom today by the British government's Department of Trade and Industry:
"Michael Heseltine, secretary of state for trade and industry, has decided, in accordance with the advice of the director general of fair trading, to refer the proposed acquisition by Alcatel Cable SA of STC Limited to the Monopolies and Mergers Commission (MMC) for investigation and report under the provisions of the Fair Trading Act 1973. The MMC are required to make their report by 28 January 1994.
"The secretary of state considers that the proposed acquisition raises competition concerns in the operation of the submarine cable systems market which merit investigation by the MMC. The decision to make a reference does not in anyway prejudge the question of whether or not the merger would be against the public interest. It is for the MMC to report on this after investigation."
