PROMIS SOFTWARE PORTING TO HEWLETT-PACKARD

 TORONTO, Oct. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Promis Systems Corporation (Toronto Stock Exchange: PSW) announced today that it is porting its PROMIS(R) software to the UNIX(R)-based Hewlett-Packard 9000 Series 800 computer platform. Promis is a leading supplier of plant floor and manufacturing execution software. Hewlett-Packard is the leading vendor of UNIX(R)-based Systems.
 According to Advanced Manufacturing Research (AMR) the manufacturing execution software market is growing at 15 percent - 25 percent, making it one of the fastest growing segments in the manufacturing software marketplace.
 UNIX(R) is becoming the preferred operating system of today's manufacturers. The Gartner Group believes that UNIX(R) related manufacturing applications will represent nearly 70 percent of systems sold in 1997.
 "The port of PROMIS to the Hewlett-Packard 9000 Series 800 platform further strengthens the leading positions of both companies in the MES market," stated Rocky Gunderson, director of Hewlett-Packard's Americas Industry Marketing Center.
 "We believe that a UNIX(R)-based solution utilizing an industry leading application from Promis, coupled with the industry leading Hewlett-Packard PA-RISC architecture, is a solution our customers will enthusiastically embrace. This advance will allow our customers to achieve all the advantages of Open Systems environments, such as lowered cost of hardware and standardized environments," said Elliot Wassarman, president and CEO of Promis Systems.
 As part of the agreement, Hewlett-Packard will jointly market PROMIS and provide technical assistance to Promis Systems for the port of the software to Hewlett-Packard's HP-UX environment. The HP-UX design and architecture of the PROMIS software will support Client/Server and be based on the Oracle database environment.
 The porting will include all PROMIS functionality and will provide a market leading, fully functional UNIX(R)-based manufacturing execution system. Beta software is scheduled for availability in the second calendar quarter of 1994.
