PROGRESSIVE FARMER SALUTES FARMERS, 'THE ORIGINAL ENVIRONMENTALISTS'

BIRMINGHAM, Ala., Jan. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Progressive Farmer magazine has created a special poster to"show how farming coexists with the environment and to encourage pride among farmers who use the land responsibly, announced Editor Jack Odle.
"We like to think that farmers are the original caretakers of the earth and should be proud of their work," said Managing Editor Joe Link. "Ray E. Watkins Jr. created a beautiful illustration for the cover of the January issue of Corn/Soybeans Midwest, a commodity business news magazine that we publish. We decided to turn the illustration into a poster and make it available to farmers."
The Watkins illustration depicts farmland and wetlands, barns and factories, irrigation and clear streams, all on the same planet, existing in harmony.
"Environmental groups frequently criticize farmers, sometimes without understanding how they really operate or what their lifestyle is like," Odle said. "But farmers make their living from the land. It's in their own best interest to take care of it, and we think the vast majority of American farmers are good stewards of the land they work. We want them to be proud of the important work they do."
Farmers can order their posters by sending $9.95 to Farm Poster, Progressive Farmer, Box 69, Birmingham, AL 35283-0069. The magazine will cover shipping and handling.
Progressive Farmer and Corn/Soybeans Midwest are published by Southern Progress Corporation, which also publishes Southern Living, Cooking Light and Southern Accents magazines, as well as Oxmoor House books. The Birmingham-based company is the largest regional publisher of magazines and books in the country.
