PROGRESS USERS PRAISE APPLICATION DEVELOPMENT ENVIRONMENT AND CUSTOMER SUPPORT PROGRAMS

Independent Sources Document High Level of Customer Satisfaction
BEDFORD, Mass., Jan. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Progress Software Corporation (NASDAQ: PRGS), developer of the PROGRESS Application Development Environment (ADE), today announced the product and support-related awards and accolades the company received in 1992. PROGRESS, which consists of a fourth-generation language, relational database management system, and associated developer productivity and end-user query and reporting tools, received awards and honors from Datapro Information Services Group, VAR Business magazine, and the Software Support Professionals Association.
Over the past four years, users solicited by Datapro rated PROGRESS higher than the competition, which includes Ask/Ingres, Information Builders, Informix, Oracle, and Sybase, with an "Overall Satisfaction" rating of at least 9.0 (out of a possible 10). In 1992 PROGRESS received a 9.3 in "Overall Satisfaction." In a separate survey, PROGRESS earned a place on Datapro's UNIX Honor Roll when it received the highest "Overall Satisfaction" rating for UNIX DBMSs -- a 3.8 out of a possible 5 -- from its users in Datapro's User Ratings of UNIX Systems Survey. Respondents to the UNIX survey included users of Ask/Ingres, Informix, Oracle, and Sybase's DBMS products.
Also, for the second straight year, PROGRESS was rated higher by its value-added resellers in VAR Business' Annual DBMS Report Card, beating out Ask/Ingres, Borland, and Informix in each of the 18 product and support categories.
In addition to the DBMS and UNIX-specific awards received in 1992, The Software Support Professionals Association (SSPA), based in San Diego, California, presented Progress Software with its industry-wide Software Technical Assistance Recognition (STAR) award for "Sustained Performance" in customer support. The award was based on the measured success of Progress Software's established technical support and service programs.
"Progress Software's mission is to provide application developers with an open systems solution for rapidly building and deploying mission-critical applications, backing that technology with innovative customer support programs," said John Wark, Progress Software's vice president of marketing. "The accolades received in 1992 represent Progress Software's continued commitment to maintaining a high level of customer satisfaction worldwide."
Reprints of user ratings on PROGRESS from Datapro's DBMS and UNIX Systems Surveys as well as VAR Business' 1991 and 1992 DBMS Report Cards are available from Progress Software.
