PRODUCTION BEGINS ON THE DISNEY CHANNEL PREMIERE FILM,
'THE ERNEST GREEN STORY,' IN LITTLE ROCK, ARK., ON JUNE 1 Morris Chestnut and Ossie Davis Star in Disney Channel Premiere Film that Recounts Significant Historical Event in the Civil Rights Movement
BURBANK, Calif., May 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Production will begin June 1, 1992, on a new premiere film for The Disney Channel, "The Ernest Green Story," announced Gary Marsh, vice president of original programming for The Disney Channel. Filmed entirely on location in Little Rock, Ark., "The Ernest Green Story" will star Morris Chestnut ("Boyz N' the Hood") as Green and Ossie Davis ("Jungle Fever") as Ernest's grandfather.
In 1957, three years after the Supreme Court ruling in Brown v. Board of Education, which found that "separate but equal" school facilities were inherently unequal, Green and eight other Black American high school students attempted to enroll in the segregated Central High School in Little Rock. Determined to get the best education available to him, Green, the only senior among the nine Black American students, withstood verbal and physical abuse, and was the only Black American student of the original "Arkansas Nine" to graduate from Central High. The governor closed down the school in 1958.
"This poignant story of the courage and perseverance of nine Black American teenagers, whose only goal was to receive the quality education guaranteed to them by the U.S. Constitution, is as vital and relevant today as it was in 1957," said Marsh.
"The Ernest Green Story" will have its world premiere on The Disney Channel in 1993. Jean Higgins is the producer, and Carol Abrams and Adrienne Levin are co-producers. Eric Laneuville, a 1992 Director's Guild of America award winner, will direct from Lawrence Roman's script.
An open call for actors and extras will be held in Little Rock on Saturday, May 16, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Multi Agency Complex Building, Room 4A-400, located at 1 State Capitol Mall. A non- returnable snapshot or photograph is required. All applicants must be over the age of 16. For further casting information, contact Sarah Tackett at The Agency Inc., 501-374-6447.
The Disney Channel is a subsidiary of The Walt Disney Co.
