PRODUCTION BEGINS AT UNOCAL'S HORIZON OIL FIELD OFFSHORE THE NETHERLANDS

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Unocal Corp. today announced the start-up of crude oil production from Horizon, a new field in the Netherlands sector of the North Sea.
Unocal Netherlands B. V., a wholly owned subsidiary of Unocal, is operator of the Horizon field. The field is located in the P/9 block, some 30 miles offshore the Netherlands in 100 feet of water.
Oil production is expected to peak at approximately 18,000 barrels per day in early 1994, when the five initial horizontal wells are all on stream. Production began this week from the first well, at a rate of 3,800 barrels per day. The other four horizontal wells are scheduled to be drilled later this year.
The Horizon field was discovered in 1982. Since then, Unocal's advances in horizontal drilling technology have made field development economically possible. With this technology, more crude oil can be recovered because the wells extend a longer distance horizontally than vertically, allowing greater access to oil-bearing zones. Unocal developed horizontal technology in the
Netherlands and was the first to apply it in the North Sea. Unocal has also used its horizontal drilling expertise offshore California, in the Gulf of Mexico and in Cook Inlet, Alaska. It holds the world record for highest average angle -- nearly 79 degrees -- for a horizontal well.
The Horizon field has a newly installed, 16-slot wellhead/process platform with a production capacity of 20,000 barrels of oil per day. A bridge connects the platform to a jack-up rig, which provides utility support, including electrical power, living quarters, helicopter deck, central control room and various safety equipment.
A 10-inch diameter, 30-mile long pipeline connects the Horizon platform with the existing Helder "A" platform in the nearby Q/1 block, where further processing of the crude oil takes place. From the Helder "A" platform, Horizon production is transported to Oiltanking Amsterdam B.V.'s terminal facilities near Amsterdam via the main 20-inch pipeline.
Unocal Netherlands holds an 80 percent working interest in the Horizon field. Its partner, DSM Energy Netherlands B. V., holds 20 percent.
Unocal Netherlands B. V. has been producing crude oil from the Q/1 block offshore the Netherlands since 1982 and natural gas from the L/11-B block since 1986. The company holds interests in various other exploration blocks on the Dutch continental shelf.
