PROCTER & GAMBLE INTRODUCES A NEW GENERATION OF DOWNY; SMALLER
BOTTLES MADE WITH 50 PERCENT RECYCLED PLASTIC
CINCINNATI, June 17 /PRNewswire/ -- The Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE: PG) today announced the national introduction of Ultra Downy and Ultra Downy Refill -- a new generation of product and packaging. Downy's new, smaller bottles contain less packaging material and are easier for consumers to use.
Ultra Downy is the first concentrated fabric softener available in a bottle made with at least 50 percent post-consumer recycled plastic and has 35 percent less packaging by weight than original Downy bottles.
Ultra Downy is a new generation of product and packaging from Procter & Gamble's Downy brand. In 1989, this same brand introduced Downy Refill, the first concentrated fabric softener in a refill. New Ultra Downy Refill, unlike the earlier Downy Refill, does not require dilution.
Consumers can pour one small capful of concentrated Ultra Downy into each wash and, when the bottle is empty, refill it directly with Ultra Downy Refill without having to add water to the bottle. By using Ultra Downy and Ultra Downy Refill together, consumers send less trash to landfills and help build markets for recycled plastic.
"Procter & Gamble is committed to improving product packaging by using less material and more recycled plastic. Original Downy Refill took a first step in this direction several years ago by reducing its packaging by approximately 75 percent compared to regular 64-ounce Downy bottles. Now Downy Ultra Downy goes one step further by using smaller bottles made with 50 percent recycled plastic," explained Charles Murray, director, product development for Downy.
Procter & Gamble's national introduction of Ultra Downy is directly linked to the overwhelmingly positive consumer acceptance of the product in its Little Rock, Ark., test market, as well as national acceptance of original Downy Refill and compact granule detergents. Ultra Downy will be available first in the Northeast this month.
Ultra Downy will offer concentrated Downy fabric softener in four different sizes: 10-use, 20-use, 40-use, and 60-use bottles. Ultra Downy Refill will be available in 20-use, 40-use, and 60-use containers. The original Downy in 64-ounce bottles will still be available, however, once Ultra Downy arrives in a market all other sizes of original Downy will be discontinued.
Procter & Gamble is a $27 billion company that makes and markets a wide range of products for both consumer and institutional use worldwide. Procter & Gamble does business in more than 140 countries.
