PRO-TEC COATING COMPANY BEGINS PRODUCTION

LEIPSIC, Ohio, Jan. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Production of hot-dipped galvanized steel sheet products has begun at PRO-TEC Coating Company, the new $200 million joint venture here of the U.S. Steel Group of USX Corporation (NYSE: X) and Kobe Steel, Ltd., of Japan.
The PRO-TEC plant is one of the largest such facilities in the world, capable of producing 600,000 tons of corrosion-resistant steel annually.
The new plant was constructed over a 22-month period to supply high quality coated steel products mainly to American and Japanese transplant automakers. Other markets for the product include home appliances and construction.
The plant supplies quality coated sheet products in gauges of 0.015-0.090 inches and widths of 28-74 inches. The sheets have coating weights of 30-150 grams per square meter for galvanized products and 30-90 grams per square meter for galvannealed products.
Master coils for the continuous galvanizing plant are supplied primarily from U.S. Steel's Gary Works in Indiana.
In March, 1990, USX and Kobe signed a definitive agreement to form PRO-TEC and construction of the seven acre (312,000 square feet) greenfield plant began in February 1991. The site, 20 miles northwest of Findlay and 55 miles southwest of Toledo, was chosen because of its access to midwestern steel markets, a solid transportation network and favorable tax incentives.
Construction ran ahead of schedule on the project. Plans originally called for production on the line to begin in February, but cold commissioning began last September and hot runs in December. Initial commercial production came on Jan. 4, two months ahead of schedule.
PRO-TEC is headed by William P. Lewis, general manager, a veteran of 27 years with the U.S. Steel Group. About 90 people are employed at the Leipsic plant.
USX and Kobe Steel have another joint venture in Ohio, the USS/KOBE Steel Company in Lorain, which produces steel bars for the automotive and machinery industries and tubular products for the oil and gas-producing markets.
