PRO-DEX REPORTS YEAR-END FINANCIALS

CITRUS HEIGHTS, Calif., Oct. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Pro-Dex Inc. (NASDAQ: PDEX), a dental products and services company, reported today net income of $73,067, or $.02 per share, on revenues of $6.9 million for the fiscal year ended June 30, 1993. Revenues for the year were up 9 percent over last.
For the quarter ended June 30, 1993, Pro-Dex reported revenues of $1,805,786 and a net loss of $274,144, or $.06 per share, for the quarter. The number of shares outstanding used in the earnings per share computation for the periods increased to 4,990,450 from 3,924,985 last year.
The increased revenues for the fiscal year came primarily from dental center operations due to an increase in new patients from the California State Welfare program (Denti-Cal). The dental centers had increased costs associated with gearing up for their net qualification for and participation in a new California State managed dental care program that is slated to begin early next year. Revenues for Biotrol were up only slightly due to the failure of Healthco International, one of its largest customers historically representing over 30 percent of Biotrol's sales volume. Substantially all of the business that was previously done by Healthco has now been absorbed by other long-standing Biotrol customers mitigating any long-term effect from the loss of that business.
The losses for the quarter and reduced earnings for the fiscal year include extraordinary items totaling $246,605 and other one-time expenses which accounted for an additional $254,000 write-off. The extraordinary items include a $169,943 write-off of an outstanding receivable from Healthco International. Additional one-time expenses were incurred related to the company's recent acquisition of Challenge Products Inc. Challenge Products is expected to add approximately $250,000 in revenues in the first quarter of consolidated revenues which ended Sept. 30, 1993.
"Although our fourth quarter placed a number of unavoidable barriers in the way of our continued earnings growth we recorded record sales at both Biotrol and the dental centers for each of the three months of the first quarter of Fiscal 1994," said Kent Searl, president of Pro-Dex. "Beginning with the first quarter we expect to continue our earnings growth trend with a significant contribution from Challenge Products in the January or February time frame," said Searl.
