PRO-DEX REPORTS SECOND QUARTER FINANCIALS, COMPLETES BIOTROL BUY
CITRUS HEIGHTS, Calif., Feb. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Pro-Dex Inc. (NASDAQ: PDEX), specializing in infection control products for the dental industry, reported today revenues of $1,238,460 for the quarter ended Dec. 31, 1992, an increase of 34 percent over the same period last year.
On Nov. 11, 1991, Pro-Dex acquired Biotrol International Inc. Biotrol sells infection control products such as anti-bacteria and disinfectant chemical products, gloves, masks and a new line of disposable dental drills. Biotrol was moved from Utah to Louisville, Colo., in August to maximize management efficiency and to improve inventory and cost controls. Pro-Dex incurred one-time acquisition, relocation and related expenses of $70,500, and, during August, Biotrol reported only $75,000 in revenue, compared to an average $153,000 per month for fiscal 1991. Those expenses coupled with a loss of $61,169 in the first quarter because of the loss of business during the relocation, equate to nearly $.04 per share in business for the six-month period.
For the quarter, Biotrol contributed $812,248 to combined revenues and $65,615 to net earnings. This is an increase of 41 percent over the previous quarter at Biotrol in which they reported revenues of $575,344 and a loss of $61,169. The increase is because of additional marketing efforts from Pro-Dex and more efficient handling of inventory and shipping. Biotrol put into effect its first price increase since 1989, effective Feb. 1, 1992. The increase, averaging 8 percent, along with two major product introductions, is expected to continue the increase in revenues and profits over the next two fiscal quarters.
During the quarter, Pro-Dex dental care centers experienced a reduction in revenues because of a general economic downturn, and the severity of the recession in Northern California where the centers are located. To counter this decrease, Pro-Dex stepped up its group dental marketing efforts. As a result, all five centers were added as providers for the California State Welfare program (Denti-Cal) in November. "This has increased our new patient count at all locations and should return the centers to profitability for the remaining quarters of fiscal 1992," said Kent Searl, Pro-Dex president.
For the quarter ended Dec. 31, 1991, Pro-Dex reported earnings of $31,962 or $.01 per share vs. $68,025, or $.02 per share for the same period last year. For the six-month period, Pro-Dex reported revenues of $2,310,835, compared to $1,807,371 last year, a 28 percent increase. "With the rapid growth in the infection control market, we are poised for tremendous growth as we set our focus on improved profitability and shareholder value," said Searl.
