PRINCE BABY DEAD; Singer's little boy lives just a week.

The newborn son of rock star Prince has died in hospital.

The singer and his wife Mayte were yesterday said to be "numb with grief".

The baby, born horribly deformed and severely retarded, survived just one week.

But Prince, 38, kept the news secret.

Though the baby boy died on October 23, the tragic star kept up the pretence of being a joyful new dad.

The tiny baby suffered from Type 2 Pfeiffer's Syndrome, a deformity of the skull.

An eyewitness said Prince and Mayte, 23, wept as their son died before their eyes.

Prince hugged his wife and said: "Darling, the baby is going to heaven. We will see him there one day."

A doctor in the Minneapolis hospital said: "There was nothing we could do. It is very sad."

A simple funeral service was attended only by Prince and Mayte.

The baby was cremated, but the death kept secret, with the names of the parents missing from the birth and death certificates.

Prince officially has no name - just a symbol.

To get over the tragedy, he is said to have thrown himself into promoting his new album Emancipation.

"The more he worked, the less pain he felt," said a friend.

"The ordeal has been horrible for him, but at least he and Mayte are young enough to have more children."

The heartbeat of his unborn child can be heard on a video made to go with his new album.

The sound, recorded in his wife's womb, is on the track Sex in the Summer.
