PRIMEDEX ANNOUNCES 'BREAKTHROUGH' ARBITRATION AGREEMENT COVERING WORKERS' COMPENSATION CLAIMS

CULVER CITY, Calif., March 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Primedex Corp., a major provider of workers' compensation care, announced today that it had reached a "breakthrough" arbitration agreement with an insurance company regarding workers' compensation claims that promises to favorably impact the system.
Primedex said it and Unicare Insurance Co., of Los Angeles, had entered into an agreement that calls for binding arbitration for all medical/legal claims which are unresolved for 60 days or longer.
"We're not suggesting that this agreement is the answer to all the problems attendant to workers' compensation insurance in the state," said David Gardner, M.D., Primedex Corp. president. "We view this agreement as an important step towards reducing the huge backlog of workers' compensation cases now before the courts, especially if it is adopted by others. It should ultimately result in substantial cost reductions to employers and insurance companies, and facilitate fair and impartial dispositions of claims."
The agreement applies to all unresolved claims, except those already on appeal or denied by the Workers' Compensation Appeals Board. The machinery for arbitration begins after 60 days, and the parties have another 45 days to reach agreement before submitting to arbitration.
Heretofore, the average unresolved claim took two years or longer for disposition, estimates Primedex. "It clogged the court system, and was unsatisfactory from the viewpoints of the worker, the employer and most everyone else," said Dr. Gardner. "We're hopeful that other insurance firms will enter into similar agreements so that cases can be impartially and promptly settled."
Primedex, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Primedex Health Systems (NASDAQ: PMDX), is a medical management company providing administrative, financial and management services to medical corporations currently operating eight clinics in the greater Los Angeles area.
