PREVIEW: SONIC THE HEDGEHOG (PG).
Need for speed: Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz) THE lovable blue hedgehog, who starred in a series of video games on the Sega Mega Drive and successive consoles, headlines this big screen adventure directed by Jeff Fowler.
Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz) grows up under the care of owl protector Longclaw (Donna Jay Fulks) until he is forced to flee his home.
Using a magical ring portal, Sonic hastily relocates to the forest surrounding the sleeping Montana community of Green Hills, where generations of the Wachowski family have protected locals for more than 50 years.
Tom Wachowski (James Marsden) has taken up the mantle as town cop but he hungers for a greater challenge.
He plans to move to San Francisco with veterinarian wife Maddie (Tika Sumpter), bidding farewell to the station house and dim-witted police officer Billy (Adam Pally).
Those plans are put on hold when Sonic unexpectedly gatecrashes Tom's home to escape the clutches of deranged genius Dr Robotnik (Jim Carrey) and his sidekick, Agent Stone (Lee Majdoub).
Tom reluctantly agrees to accompany Sonic on a harebrained road trip from Green Hills to San Francisco to conjure a portal to a far-flung planet, where the hedgehog will be safe from Robotnik and his weaponised drones.
