 PREVENTION MAGAZINE HONORS CHRYSLER CORPORATION
FOR SAFETY OF ITS 1992 MINIVANS
DETROIT, Feb. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Prevention magazine, the nation's leading health publication, today honored Chrysler Corporation (NYSE: C) for the safety leadership of its 1992 Dodge Caravan and Plymouth Voyager minivans.
Citing a proven safety record in government and private-insurer tests, the minivans were honored as part of the 1992 Prevention "Safe Car of the Year Awards." The Caravan and Voyager were Prevention's top safety choice in the passenger van category.
The 1992 Chrysler New Yorker also was cited for its safety leadership, receiving an honorable mention award in the passenger car category.
Prevention Publisher Richard Porter praised all the award recipients for "placing safety high on the priority list in the design and production of their automobiles.
"Your leadership in the safety arena has shown a commitment that goes beyond profit. It is a commitment to the safety of the consumer, which is the highest value of all," Porter said.
The Prevention magazine award represents the fourth safety-related award for the 1992 Chrysler minivans. Last November, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the Society of Plastics Engineers and Popular Science magazine all honored Chrysler for the world's only Integrated Child Seats, which the company offers on the Dodge Caravan and Plymouth Voyager.
Chrysler also was the first company to equip minivans with a driver's side air bag. Last October, Chrysler built its 2 millionth air bag-equipped vehicle, a 1992 Dodge Caravan. The milestone minivan also was equipped with several optional safety features, including the Integrated Child Seats, all-wheel drive and anti-lock brakes.
In conjunction with today's awards, Prevention magazine will make monetary contributions to Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) and Students Against Driving Drunk (SADD) on behalf of the honorees.
The 1992 Prevention "Safe Car of the Year" winners were selected based on the performance of their automobiles in government and private- insurer safety evaluations. The two primary criteria were occupant death rates and crash-test results. These criteria were selected because of their clear and concise measurement of the structural integrity of the automobile and how it has performed on the highway.
The criteria were then adjusted to reflect the size and weight of the automobile, its total number of vehicle registrations, driver age and sex, and predicted and actual death rates in accidents. More than 65 vehicles were evaluated for their performance under these conditions.
Prevention magazine is the nation's leading health publication and has more than 9 million monthly readers. It is a publication of Rodale Press, publishers of such well-known titles as Men's Health, Runner's World, Bicycling, and Backpacker magazines.
