PREVALENCE OF TORUS MANDIBULARIS AND TORUS PALATINUS AMONG CHILDREN AND ADULTS IN JORDAN.

Byline: THAMER MOHAMMAD ANWAR BSOUL

Abstract

The objective of this study wasp to determine the prevalence of torus palatinus and mandibularis in relation to age and gender among 322 subjects seen at Hill House Kindergarden Students Mashrek International School and our clinic.

Out of the 322 subjects examined only 30(9.3./.) had either TP TM or both.

Key Words: Torus Palatinus (TP) Torus Mandibularis (TM) Jordan.

INTRODUCTION

Torus Palatinus and Torus Mandibularis are non pathological outgrowths of unclear etiology that are seen on the jaw bones. Tori tend to grow gradually and majority are nodular and are either unilateral or bilateral and singular or multiple in type.12

Both tori are usually asymptotic and unless it interferes with wearing dentures causing ulcers they need not require surgical removal.34

METHODOLOGY

322 subjects were examined for the prevalence of both tori in Mashrek International School Hill House Kindergarden and in our clinic. The age group was wide and ranged from 2- years to 60 years.

The presence of tori was confirmed by palpation and clinical examination. Study subjects were divided according to gender and age groups.

DISCUSSION

Belsky et al showed a small but significant positive relation for post menopausal Caucasian women between bone mineral density and tori size after controlling variables affecting bone density.

Sukuki and Sakai et al reported that TP and TM are equivalent with autosomal dominant inheritance.

Johnson et al supported the dominant inheritance theory of both TP and TM.5-10

CONCLUSION

Torus mandibularis was more common than torus palatinus regardless of age group.

There was no recorded TM below the age of 14. The youngest subject with toropalatinus was 4-year old boy.
