PRESSTEK APPOINTS JAMES L. BAST PRESIDENT AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

HUDSON, N.H., June 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Presstek, Inc. (NASDAQ: PRST) announced today it has appointed James L. Bast as president, chief executive officer, and a director. Bast replaces Dr. Lawrence Howard, who remains as vice chairman of the board. Robert Howard, chairman of Presstek, stated, "This planned transition of senior management results from Presstek's recognition of the need for an executive with Mr. Bast's extensive leadership experience as the company advances toward significant growth opportunities in many segments of the graphic arts and printing industries with Presstek's newly developed direct imaging printing press technologies and additional products."
Prior to joining Presstek, Bast, 57, served as president and chief executive officer of the A.B. Dick Company, a worldwide supplier to the graphic arts industry. Bast previously served in several senior management positions of Pitney Bowes, including president of the $1.3 billion U.S. Business Systems Division, president and chief executive officer of Dictaphone Corporation, a subsidiary, and chief financial officer of the corporation.
Bast is a graduate of both Columbia College and the Columbia School of Engineering and Applied Science, and holds a master's degree in business administration from New York University. Bast is a former Naval officer. He and his wife, Mary G. Bast, will be relocating from Connecticut to New Hampshire.
Presstek, Inc. has developed and patented a proprietary filmless direct imaging technology for the graphic arts and printing industries, encompassing two revolutionary applications: 1) a printing press using the digital direct-to-plate, filmless imaging technology for simple and environmentally-clean color printing; and 2) a stand-alone platemaker used for off-line imaging of printing plates, incorporating the company's direct imaging technology. Presstek recently introduced its revolutionary new PEARL laser technology (capable of producing finished printed full-color materials of a quality that industry experts consider comparable to the highest printing industry standards) which is initially licensed to the world's largest printing press manufacturer, Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG. The new improved-performance PEARL technology uses proprietary laser diodes and a unique optical system to etch images directly onto Presstek's printing plates, which can be used by presses of any make, size or type. This PEARL imaging process results in higher resolution for producing superior print quality in shorter time and at lower cost than Presstek's earlier spark discharge system or competitive processes. Presstek also is engaged in the development of additional products and applications that incorporate the use of Presstek's proprietary technologies.
