PRESS STATEMENT FROM ARTHUR ASHE

 PRESS STATEMENT FROM ARTHUR ASHE
NEW YORK, April 14 /PRNewswire/ -- The following is a press

statement from Arthur Ashe:
Understandably, as a member of the Board of Directors of Aetna Life & Casualty since 1982, I have been the subject of speculation in the media concerning my position on AIDS. Aetna is one America's largest companies providing a range of insurance products and financial services. AIDS is one of many important developments in our ongoing discussions regarding the state of our nation's insurance industry.
I am very familiar, as are the other Board members, with Aetna's policy on AIDS coverage. First, Aetna no longer offers any individual health policies. The premiums that had to be charged to continue individual coverage became economically prohibitive, so they were discontinued. For individual life coverage, AIDS testing is a standard part of company procedures which are consistent with industry practices.
There is significant coverage of HIV-positive individuals under Aetna's various group plans. These new and existing policies require no individual underwriting, and there are no special limitations on this coverage. In fact, Aetna will not sell or administer any health plan that singles out AIDS for limitations, caps or exclusions. I am covered as a Board member and have received re-imbursements for AIDS- related treatment from Aetna which is my secondary insurer.
As a member of Aetna's Committee on Corporate Public Involvement, I have voted "yes" to more than $2.35 million over the past 5 years in contributions to organizations which provide direct service and education to prevent AIDS. Last year alone, Aetna donated more than 640,000 to these causes. Aetna is a member of the National Leadership Coalition On AIDS and received the McKinney Foundation's 1990 Leadership Award for its efforts.
Though my AIDS condition has been headline news recently, this disease is just one of many significant medical challenges which face our nation today. If anyone can be described as such, I am a lucky AIDS patient. I do not want for medicine, doctors, family support or personal initiative. Many, many others -- AIDS patients among them -- are not so lucky. I know Aetna stands ready to support measures to expand coverage under private sector health benefit plans that are combined with assistance for those unable to afford private insurance. The sooner this occurs, the faster anyone with AIDS and other serious maladies will benefit.
