Tieuli and Joyce capture top spots in 6K
Matt Tieuli of Upton won Sunday's Worcester Firefighters Memorial 6K road race in 18 minutes, 20 seconds. Tom Guerin of Auburn was second (18:39), followed by Rob Lind of Worcester (18:46), Paul Noone of Worcester (19:00) and Stephen Polito of Worcester (19:15). Sarah Joyce of Worcester was the top women's finisher in 21:53, followed by Kristen Brownell of Leicester (22:12).
Westboro's Ashley Hayden was recently recognized as USA Luge's Female Athlete of the Year. Hayden, 26, enjoyed one of her best seasons, sliding to five top-10 World Cup results and completing the series sixth overall. Hayden also slid to a ninth-place result at the world championships before winning the national title.
Algonquin senior Danielle DePalo took third place and Narragansett sophomore Jillena Decarteret tied for sixth in the girls' pole vault at the New England Interscholastic Track & Field Championships at Fitchburg State. Both cleared 10 feet, 6 inches. In the boys' competition, Oakmont senior Alex LeBlanc (14-6) took second and Westboro senior Forrest Xiao (14-0) sixth. The pole vault was postponed to yesterday because of bad weather Saturday.

Can-Am names Mattox Pitcher of Week
For the second week in a row, a Worcester Tornadoes player was honored by the Can-Am League. Worcester's D.J. Mattox was named the Pitcher of the Week after going 1-0 and not allowing a run in 14 innings of work while striking out 14. Mattox is third in the league with 22 strikeouts and ninth in the league with a 2.05 ERA. Last week first baseman Chris Colabello was named the Can-Am League Batter of the Week.
