PRESS/MEDIA INVITED TO 'DRILLING/GROUNDBREAKING' FOR NEW NATURAL GAS PIPELINE UNDER NEW YORK HARBOR

 PRESS/MEDIA INVITED TO 'DRILLING/GROUNDBREAKING'
FOR NEW NATURAL GAS PIPELINE UNDER NEW YORK HARBOR
Brooklyn Union Gas, Con Edison and the United States Coast Guard will literally and figuratively break new ground when drilling begins for a pipeline to transport natural gas from Brooklyn to Governors Island.
The innovative project, which marks the first use of horizontal directional drilling for a natural gas pipeline in New York City, entails boring horizontally more than 2,300 feet, much of it through the glacial sediments 20 feet under Buttermilk Channel, the body of water separating Red Hook, Brooklyn from Governors Island. The drilling will not disturb the environment of the waterway, nor interrupt boat traffic.
The U.S. Coast Guard, which maintains its Atlantic Area headquarters on Governors Island, is converting its 120 buildings there from oil to gas.
