PRESIDENT OF DETROIT BAR ASSOCIATION, KAREN SMITH KIENBAUM, JOINS VARNUM, RIDDERING, SCHMIDT & HOWLETT

 GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., Feb. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Karen Smith Kienbaum, president of the 3,400-member Detroit Bar Association, has joined the law firm of Varnum, Riddering, Schmidt & Howlett. She will establish the firm's office in Southeast Michigan, specializing as a member of the firm's Labor & Employment Relations Practice Group.
 According to Hilary F. Snell, Managing Partner of the firm, "We are especially pleased to welcome Karen Kienbaum to Varnum, Riddering. She is an outstanding lawyer and a recognized authority in the areas of litigation, OSHA, wrongful discharge, and employment discrimination. Her affiliation with our firm is an opportunity to enhance service to our clients, particularly those in Southeast Michigan."
 Prior to joining Varnum, Riddering, Kienbaum was senior attorney with Ford Motor Company where she was initially litigating employment matters, and more recently was principally responsible for health and safety matters at all domestic facilities. She has also served as assistant general counsel and director of the Employee Relations Group of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Michigan. In addition, she worked for two years as a public defender in Detroit.
 Kienbaum is a past president of the American Corporate Counsel Association - Michigan Chapter (ACCA). Recently re-elected to the Council of the Labor and Employment Relations Section of the State Bar of Michigan, she also serves on the Standing Committee of the State Bar of Michigan on Professionalism and as a delegate to the American Bar Association's House of Delegates.
 Kienbaum has appeared before many Michigan and federal courts, including the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit and the Michigan Supreme Court. She is a frequent speaker on labor and employment relations matters.
 Kienbaum earned undergraduate degrees in history and education from the University of Michigan and received her juris doctorate degree from the University of Detroit. She will continue to reside in Grosse Pointe Park, Mich.
