PREP VOLLEYBALL: ROYAL, H.-W. FACE SECOND ROUND.

Byline: Lee Barnathan Daily News Staff Writer

Here they go again. Bring your ear plugs.

Except for the respective sites, very little is expected to have changed when the Royal and Harvard-Westlake girls' volleyball teams meet their opponents tonight.

It was only a week ago that Royal beat Marina in the Southern Section Division I-A championship and Harvard-Westlake beat Notre Dame Academy in Division III-A.

Marina and Notre Dame each get another shot at their opponents tonight at 7 in the second round of the state playoffs. Only this time, they won't play on a neutral court like Cypress College. This time, they have to win on the road.

Since it was only a week ago, no introductions are needed. Royal (32-4) knows Chanda McLeod, Marina's left-handed outside hitter, who led the Vikings (20-2) with 21 kills, 16 of which came in the third and fourth games. And Marina is all too familiar with Courtney Guerra, Teresa Russell, Toni-Ann Merendino and Kellie Lyons.

Guerra led with 25 kills from the outside, and Russell had 14 kills and seven blocks. Merendino and Lyons played key roles in Royal's fourth-game comeback, contributing key kills and digs to help the Highlanders turn a 14-9 deficit into a 16-14 title-clinching victory.

``It comes down to how much adjustment you want to make,'' Royal coach Bob Ferguson said. ``If you spend hours and hours on your opponent, you're in trouble. It's going to come down to who executes their offense the best, who passes the best, who blocks and best and who serves the toughest.''

The same holds true for Harvard-Westlake (20-5). Notre Dame (19-3) must figure out a way to stop Anne Jakle and Joanna August on the outside and Kelly Ayers in the middle. Jakle and August combined for 28 kills, but Notre Dame would be wise to devise a plan for the 6-foot-1 Ayers.
