PRENDERGAST TO SUCCEED RETIRING RIDDLE AS HEAD OF WACHOVIA IN GEORGIA
ATLANTA, Nov. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- G. Joseph Prendergast will become president, chief executive officer and a director of Wachovia Corporation of Georgia and Wachovia Bank of Georgia effective Jan. 6, 1993.
He will succeed D. Raymond Riddle, who plans to take early retirement on that date to join National Service Industries Inc. (NYSE: NSI) as president and chief executive officer. Riddle will continue as a director of Wachovia Corporation of Georgia and Wachovia Bank of Georgia.
Prendergast, 47, will retain his present position as head of Wachovia Corporate Services Inc., headquartered in Atlanta, with overall responsibility for national and overseas corporate banking.
Prendergast joined Wachovia in 1973 and has headed the company's international bank in New York, the Domestic Group of International Banking and the National Banking Division. Prendergast was elected executive vice president of Wachovia Corporation (NYSE: WB) and assumed his current position in late 1988. He is a native of Wilmington, Del.
Prendergast is a director of the Atlanta Symphony, the Atlanta Ballet and Junior Achievement of Atlanta and is an active volunteer for the Woodruff Arts Center. He serves on the board of visitors of the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University.
Riddle, 59, joined The First National Bank of Atlanta in 1958. He held various line, supervisory and senior management positions in the correspondent, consumer and corporate banking divisions before being elected president and chief operating officer of the bank in 1976. He assumed his current position in 1987. He is a native of Oglethorpe, Ga.
Riddle is past chairman and a director of the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce. His numerous leadership positions in community affairs include directorships of the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games, Central Atlanta Progress Inc., and the Metropolitan Atlanta Community Foundation.
"Raymond Riddle has done an exceptional job over the past five years of leading our Georgia bank through the merger transition and a slow economy," said John G. Medlin Jr., Wachovia Corporation chief executive officer. "We will miss having him as a member of our top management team, but are delighted he has the opportunity to cap off a successful banking career of nearly 35 years by heading another fine company."
Riddle said: "I was planning to retire from banking in September of next year, after reaching age 60 and completing a full and rewarding career with First Atlanta and Wachovia. I appreciate the chance to accelerate the date to accept the unique offer to head National Service Industries. It has been a real pleasure to work with John Medlin and to be part of the best banking company in the country."
Medlin said: "We are fortunate to have an accomplished and skilled banking executive like Joe Prendergast to assume the leadership role for Wachovia in Georgia. He will be supported by an outstanding team of bankers and managers assembled by Raymond across the state."
