 PREMIER ITALIAN OIL ORGANIZATION ACQUIRES
 FIRST CRAY RESEARCH SUPERCOMPUTER
PARIS, June 2 /PRNewswire/ -- AGIP S.P.A., Milan, Italy, a prominent petroleum research and process company, has ordered and installed its first Cray Research system, a CRAY Y-MP 4E supercomputer, the Eagan, Minn., (U.S.)-based supercomputer manufacturer announced today. The announcement was made at the European Association of Exploration Geophysicists Technical Exposition held at the Palais des Congres here.
The CRAY Y-MP 4E system is located at AGIP's Milan facility. The organization will use the new system for petroleum exploration and production applications such as reservoir simulation and geophysical processing.
"Our decision to install a Cray Research supercomputer at AGIP was due to both the necessity of supercomputing required in seismic processing and reservoir modeling, and the need to acquire a supercomputer that can be easily integrated with our existing network of UNIX workstations," said Silvio Zanoletti, vice president of information systems at AGIP.
"We are very pleased to add AGIP to our roster of petroleum industry customers," said George Stephenson, director of petroleum industry marketing
for Cray Research. "We are certain our leading-edge computational tools will provide AGIP with the capabilities to address petroleum exploration and production challenges."
Cray Research has 304 system installed worldwide, including 89 systems throughout Europe and seven systems in Italy. Approximately 10 percent of Cray Research systems are installed at petroleum organizations worldwide.
Cray Research creates the most powerful and highest quality computational tools for solving the world's most challenging scientific and industrial problems.
