PRECISION CASTPARTS RECEIVES ORDERS

PORTLAND, Ore., June 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Precision Castparts Corp. (NYSE: PCP), Portland-based manufacturer of aircraft engine and aerospace components and parts for the compressor, industrial turbine and health care industries, today announced that the company has received its first orders for production castings for General Electric's (NYSE: GE) new GE90 large turbofan engine which is expected to power the new generation of jet aircraft well into the 21st century. The GE order is for 20 engine sets of castings manufactured by the company's Structurals Division based in Portland. The total value of the order is approximately $24 million, including the value of castings and recovery of advance funding provided by Precision.
Precision Castparts is one of the seven supplier participants with GE and its three revenue sharing participants in the development of the GE90. Precision was responsible for providing tooling and developmental castings for engine testing for specific parts for the engine.
The GE90 is the latest in advanced engines developed by GE, with thrust expected to exceed 100,000 pounds. To date, airlines have ordered 76 firm and 46 option engines. British Airways is scheduled to be the launch customer in 1995. Others who have ordered the GE90 include Euralair, Lauda, ILFC, China Southern and Continental.
In addition to approximately 20 different types of castings produced for the GE90, Precision Castparts also manufactures parts for the competing Pratt & Whitney PW4084 and Rolls-Royce Trent 800. Turbine engines of this size and thrust will be used in service first on Boeing's 777 and are expected to be the primary source of power for other jumbo jets.
