PRE-FOREST SUMMIT SYMPOSIUM TO BE HELD IN SEATTLE, JAY GRUENFELD ASSOCIATES SAYS

SEATTLE, March 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Rep. Norm Dicks, D-Wash., will be the keynote speaker at a Pre-Forest Summit Symposium, March 22, at the Doubletree Suites Hotel, Seattle, Jay Gruenfeld Associates Inc. said today. Jay Gruenfeld Associates Inc., a Seattle forest resource consulting company, is the organizer.
The symposium will provide information for the Clinton Administration's Forest Summit (now conference), to be held April 2 and 3 in Portland, Ore. That meeting will try to resolve the stalemate on harvesting of timber on Pacific Northwest federal forests, which has caused heavy job losses, severely impacted timber-dependent communities and helped to fuel skyrocketing prices for wood products.
Jay Gruenfeld, president of the organizing firm, said, "President Clinton was elected because he recognized 'It's the economy, stupid,' and this is not a stupid administration. We are holding the symposium to put more weight on the side of people, as the president's Forest Conference seeks a balance between jobs based on federal trees, a renewable resource, and ecosystem protection. We need both, but in the past several years, people have almost totally lost out to preservation in federal forest land management decisions."
The meeting is not being subsidized by any forest products company or special interest group.
Mike Draper, executive secretary, Western Council of Industrial Workers, will be the second keynote speaker. Some of the other speakers are: Dennis Derby, Oregon Homebuilders Association; Mary Schroeder, Redding, Calif., Forest Values Task Force; Roger Sedjo, Washington, D.C., Resources for the Future; Don Peasley, president, National Intertribal Timber Council; and Dr. Chad Oliver, University of Washington College of Forest Resources.
