PRAXAIR RESTRUCTURES SURFACE TECHNOLOGIES BUSINESS

INDIANAPOLIS, Jan. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Praxair, Inc. (NYSE: PX) today announced it is consolidating certain operations of its surface technologies business, which is a worldwide supplier of ceramic and metallic coatings and powders for jet engine parts, as well as hard surfaces for printing, paper and steel finishing rolls.
The actions are part of Praxair's company-wide profit improvement program, announced yesterday, aimed at streamlining critical work processes, reducing costs, increasing sales and cash flow, and improving the company's global competitiveness.
Over the next three to four months, Praxair expects to reduce its surface technologies workforce in the U.S. by eight percent, or 85 people. Its aviation component repair services plant in Hayward, Calif., will be shut down, with its customers served by similar plants in Los Angeles, Kansas City and Miami. Two original equipment manufacturing facilities in Indianapolis will be consolidated into a single new plant at the same site.
Positions at two other manufacturing locations and at the subsidiary's headquarters in Indianapolis will be eliminated as a result of process improvements and economic conditions.
"We are responding to a significant and permanent change in the jet engine market, evidenced by a decrease in sales in the last few years, and dramatic structural changes recently announced by major customers," says Edgar G. Hotard, president of Praxair.
"By taking these actions, we will sustain our competitiveness in the jet engine market, and continue to meet our customers' expectations for high-quality, on-time repairs and coated equipment," Hotard added. "We also intend to redeploy some of the assets resulting from the plant closure to other facilities worldwide, so that we can continue to capitalize on the growth markets, such as printing and paper.
Praxair is the leading industrial gases supplier in North and South America, and one of the largest worldwide, with annual sales of $2.6 billion.
