PRAXAIR EXPANDS MEMBRANE FACILITY AT BOEING

DANBURY, Conn., Jan. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Praxair, Inc. (NYSE: PX), announced today that the largest commercial NitroGEN(TM) membrane facility in the world just got larger with the completion of an expansion that will provide an additional 38,000 cubic feet per hour (1,000 normal cubic meters per hour) of 95 percent nitrogen at The Boeing Company facility in Wichita, Kan.
To meet increased nitrogen purity, reliability, and volume requirements in the most cost effective way, Boeing replaced the use of inert flue gas generators with Praxair's NitroGEN membrane system in 1991. Boeing uses nitrogen for safety inerting in its large autoclave units, which use high pressure and temperature atmospheres to process manufactured parts used in the construction of aircraft.
The most recent expansion of Praxair's membrane system at Boeing brings the total nitrogen produced at the Wichita facility to 104,000 cubic feet per hour (2,730 normal cubic meters per hour). An additional expansion is under consideration for third quarter 1993.
The latest in air separation technology, NitroGEN membrane systems facilitate separation of gases by selective permeation through composite hollow fiber membranes arranged in cartridges in a unique configuration. Filtered atmospheric feed air is introduced into a cylinder under high pressure and forced to flow along the gas-permeable hollow fiber cartridges. Oxygen permeates the cartridge fibers and is collected and exhausted. Nitrogen, the other principal atmospheric component, flows along the cartridge and becomes higher in purity the longer it is exposed to the hollow fiber membrane.
Praxair designs, builds, owns, and operates various NitroGEN membrane supply systems for its customers. For some nitrogen users, supply by these methods can offer cost savings of 20 to 50 percent when compared to other supply alternatives.
Praxair is the largest industrial gases company in North and South America and one of the largest in the world with consolidated sales of $2.5 billion.
