PRAXAIR EXPANDS IN GLASS MARKET WITH FIVE MAJOR CONTRACTS

DANBURY, Conn., March 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Praxair, Inc. (NYSE: PX) today announced five long-term industrial gas supply and technology contracts to leading glass manufacturers in the U.S. and Mexico. Total sales over the life of the contracts will exceed $345 million. They include oxygen supply commitments of over 2100 tons per day (1900 metric tons) at four companies, including two oxy-fuel combustion technology installations. A fifth contract includes an innovative supply arrangement for low purity oxygen, plus 39 tons per day (35 metric tons) of nitrogen.
Construction and technology installation projects are completed or in progress at: Corning Asahi Video Products Company, State College, Pa.; Foster-Forbes Container Glass Co., Marion, Ind.; Gallo Glass Co., Modesto, Calif.; five Vitro, S.A. de C.V. glass plants in Mexico; and Cardinal I.G., Inc., Menomonie, Wis.
"The glass production industry represents a growing, strategic market for Praxair," said Edgar G. Hotard, president. "Through our technology and versatile delivery systems, glass manufacturers are realizing substantial operating and capital cost savings, significantly reduced emissions, enhanced product quality, and improved productivity."
Praxair's patented oxy-fuel combustion technology is bringing glass manufacturers substantial cost benefits by enhancing combustion efficiencies to reduce energy consumption, cutting nitrous oxide (NOx) and particulate emissions, and lowering the investment required for heat recovery and emission control equipment. The company also has integrated its proprietary oxy-fuel, vacuum pressure swing adsorption (VPSA) and on-site technologies to help glass industry customers further optimize their cost savings.
-- For the State College plant, which produces glass panels and funnels for color television picture tubes, Praxair is installing a 55 ton-per-day (50 metric tons) on-site oxygen noncryogenic VPSA plant that will supply a conversion from air-fuel to oxy-fuel combustion. Corning Asahi Video Products Company is a partnership formed in 1989 by Corning Incorporated and Asahi Glass America, Inc. Corning Incorporated is a Fortune 200 company that competes globally in four business sectors: specialty materials, communications, consumer products and laboratory services.
-- The Foster-Forbes project in Marion is near completion and includes the installation of a 50 ton-per-day (45 metric tons) oxygen VPSA system and Praxair's oxy-fuel combustion technology. A major glass container producer, Foster-Forbes is a division of American National Can Co.
-- At the Gallo glass facility in Modesto - one of the largest of its kind in the world - Praxair is completing the start-up of a 110 ton- per-day (100 metric tons) oxygen VPSA system. Also, Praxair is building a 500 ton-per-day (450 metric tons) cryogenic plant, which will eventually replace the VPSA system and supply oxygen to all five Gallo furnaces. Gallo Glass Co. produces bottles exclusively for E. & J. Gallo, America's leading winery.
-- All four of Vitro's glass production divisions will benefit from industrial gases delivery systems supplied by Praxair's wholly-owned subsidiary, Linde de Mexico, including a long-term commitment for 1500 tons per day (1360 metric tons) of oxygen. An oxygen pipeline now serves one crystal and two tableware plants at Monterrey, with a 20-mile (32 kilometer) pipeline providing nitrogen for the company's float glass plant in Villa de Garcia, N.L. In Mexico City, one of Vitro's container glass plants is having a 50 ton-per-day (45 metric tons) oxygen VPSA system installed, while a 200 ton-per-day (182 metric tons) on-site cryogenic air separation plant is under construction at their fiber and flat glass facility. The plant also includes 200 tons per day of merchant liquid capacity to serve growing markets in Mexico City. Vitro is one of the largest glass producers in the world.
-- At Cardinal's plant in Menomonie, Praxair's on-site nitrogen cryogenic plant is delivering up to 39 tons per day (35 metric tons) of high-purity nitrogen to provide an inert, protective atmosphere for use in their float glass production. The installation features an innovative method for
recovering low-purity oxygen from the nitrogen plant, to be used for other applications in the plant. Cardinal is a leading producer of insulated glass units. The glass industry also relies on Praxair to supply helium for the production of performance coatings; argon, krypton, neon and xenon for the production of bulbs, fiber optics and energy efficient windows; and hydrogen for flame polishing.
Praxair is the largest industrial gases supplier in North and South America and one of the largest in the world, with annual sales of $2.6 billion. The company also is a leading supplier of metallic and ceramic coatings and powders. Praxair was previously Union Carbide Industrial Gases Inc. and known as Linde in North America.
