PRAXAIR BRINGS NEW ECONOMIES TO NO-CLEAN SOLDERING

DANBURY, Conn., Feb. 1 /PRNewswire -- Praxair, Inc. (NYSE: PX), announced today that it has been awarded a new U.S. patent for its invention of efficient, cost effective retrofit equipment for wave soldering machines to better meet customers' nitrogen inerting needs. The equipment can be easily added to new and existing wave soldering machines.
"This newly-patented retrofit equipment and technology was developed in response to electronics assemblers' and manufacturers' need to gain the benefits of no-clean, controlled atmosphere wave soldering without incurring the cost of new machinery," said Michael G. Stoddard, Praxair marketing manager, Printed Wiring Boards.
U.S. Patent No. 5,176,307 is the fifth in a series to be awarded to Praxair for advancements related to controlled atmosphere wave soldering. The equipment is also available from Electrovert, the only North American manufacturer of wave and reflow soldering equipment licensed under this new patent.
Commercialized in 1991, this technology enables Praxair and Electrovert to retrofit existing wave soldering equipment for nitrogen inerting with the use of flexible curtains and adjustable width conveyors. Retrofit systems are designed, constructed, and installed to enable customers to achieve consistently low oxygen levels over the solder pot.
There is also a companion Praxair process patent, U.S. Patent No. 5,121,875, which covers a no-clean soldering process. Electronics manufacturers may contact Praxair or Electrovert to discuss how to obtain a license.
The technology covered by Praxair's patents offer electronics assemblers and manufacturers a number of benefits including: the elimination of circuit board cleaning, and chlorofluorocarbon use; greatly reduced dross production; dramatically improved soldering quality through better wetting and hole filling; decreased solder and flux consumption; and fewer defects. Praxair is licensing this latest technology, as well as related technology patented by the company.
Praxair is the largest industrial gases supplier in North and South America and one of the largest worldwide, with annual sales of $2.6 billion. The company is also a leading worldwide supplier of metallic and ceramic coatings through Praxair Surface Technologies, Inc.
