PRATT & WHITNEY LATEST PW4000 RECEIVES FAA CERTIFICATION

EAST HARTFORD, Conn., Aug. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration has granted a flight certificate to the newest member of Pratt & Whitney's PW4000 family of engines. Rated at 68,000 pounds of thrust, the 100-inch fan diameter engine is the most powerful yet certified by the FAA.
The new engine is the first growth model of the PW4000 and will enter service on the Airbus A330 in June of 1994. The 100-inch engine covers from 64,000 to 74,000 pounds of thrust. To achieve higher thrust levels this new engine has a fan diameter of 100-inches, compared to the 94-inch diameter of the base PW4000. Also, an additional stage is added to both the low pressure compressor and the low pressure turbine. The remainder of the new engine is common with the PW4000s in service today.
"This marks another major milestone in the PW4000 program to meet the need for reliable, higher thrust engines," said James T. Johnson, president of Pratt & Whitney's large commercial engines. "We are very proud that the highest certified thrust engine in the world carries the Pratt & Whitney eagle."
The first of the new engines are being installed on the Airbus A330 in Toulouse, France and will begin extensive flight testing this fall. Eight engines have undergone a rigorous ground test schedule leading to FAA certification.
"The extensive testing we've done on the 100-inch version will give our customers very high reliability when they begin operations," Johnson said.
The next growth version of the PW4000, with a 112-inch diameter fan, is already undergoing tests and will be certified in the spring of 1994.
To date, some 65 airlines around the world have ordered over 2,600 PW4000 engines. Since going into service in 1987, the PW4000 family has won 50 percent of all wide-body engine competitions and built up more than six million hours of service.
