 PRATT & WHITNEY F119 ENGINES RESUME GROUND AND FLIGHT TESTING
 WEST PALM BEACH, Fla., Dec. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- The Lockheed F-22 fighter has moved to its next stage of development beginning a 100-hour flight test program at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif. This is the first major phase of the U.S. Air Force's F-22 Engineering and Manufacturing Development (EMD) contract.
 The twin-engine F-22 is powered by Pratt & Whitney's most powerful fighter engine, the F119. Flight testing is scheduled to continue through mid-1992 and will allow engineers to refine and complete design of the aircraft. Engines used during this phase of flight testing are the same configuration as those used during the demonstration-validation phase.
 In addition to flight testing, two F119s are undergoing ground tests at Pratt & Whitney's Florida facilities to verify the design predictions for the EMD engine configuration.
 "The resumptions of flight and ground testing are important milestones for the entire F-22 team," said Walter N. Bylciw, Pratt & Whitney F119 program vice president.
 Bylciw emphasized, "We expect very few changes from the original design the Air Force competitively selected for the F-22. The program is on track to meet performance projections, and we expect it to be one of our all time great successes."
 The F119 engine uses the integrated product development approach to incorporate the latest in advanced design, metallurgy, electronic engine-control technology and manufacturing processes to deliver the performance, reliability and durability required by the F-22. This engine is the result of more than seven years of demonstration and validation development.
 The F-22, scheduled to enter operational service in 2002, is being developed to replace the F-15 air superiority fighter in service since 1974.
 The F119 represents a major advancement in jet engine technology, offering performance not attainable from engines now in service. It has 40 percent fewer parts and is more durable and easier to support and maintain than current designs.
 The engine employs many technologies developed under the Advanced Technology Engine Gas Generator (ATEGG) and Joint Technology Demonstrator Engine (JTDE) research programs, funded by the Air Force, Navy and Pratt & Whitney.
 Pratt & Whitney's Government Engines & Space Propulsion unit, based in West Palm Beach, Fla., designs, develops and supports military jet engines, rockets and space systems. Pratt & Whitney is a unit of United Technologies Corporation.
