PRATT & WHITNEY ANNOUNCES USAIR HUSH KIT ORDER

PARIS, June 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Pratt & Whitney today announced that USAir has placed an order for JT8D engine kits valued at $48 million for installation on up to 64 of the airline's 81 Boeing 737-200 jets.
A noise suppression device, the hush kit selected by USAir is comprised of the Pratt & Whitney engine kit and certain components provided by NORDAM of Tulsa, Okla.
Hush kit deliveries to USAir are scheduled to begin in 1996 and continue through 1999. Installation of the kits will bring the 737-200 aircraft into compliance with Stage III noise standards set by the U.S. government which require an airline's operating fleet to be 100 percent Stage III by the end of 1999.
Nearly 60 percent of USAir's current fleet is comprised of Stage III aircraft and the airline is ahead of the federally mandated timetable to achieve 100 percent Stage III.
NORDAM received U.S. Federal Aviation Administration certification for the 737-200 hush kit on June 26, 1992. Technically, the 737 hush kit (including the JT8D engine hush kit) is comprised of an ejector/suppressor, internal exhaust mixer, respaced inlet guide vanes and modified reverser doors.
The kit was developed jointly by NORDAM and Pratt & Whitney, with technical assistance from Boeing. Airlines and leasing companies have placed orders for hush kits for more than 150 737-200 aircraft.
Pratt & Whitney is a unit of United Technologies Corporation (NYSE: UTX), based in Hartford, Conn., U.S.A.
