PRACTICAL MODELS LEAD SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA TOYOTA SALES IN '92

IRVINE, Calif., Jan. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- 1992 was the year of the practical Toyota in Southern California, with retail sales of economical family car and truck models increasing substantially in the midst of a difficult economy.
"Toyota dealers understand the Southern California market and have responded with the right products," said John Matt, general manager of the Los Angeles regional office for Toyota Motor Distributors Inc. "Right now, strengths are in Camry, the new Corolla compact sedan and wagon and in pickups, including the intermediate-size T100."
December saw a 45.6 percent increase in Camry sedan and station wagon compared to the same month last year, with sales of 2,674. A 30.0 percent rise in Corolla sales to 1,368, coincided with increasing availability of the new compact and the introduction of a low-cost lease plan.
December was also the strongest month for Toyota four-wheel drive sport utility vehicles with sales of the 4Runner up by 8.0 percent to 685 and the highly upgraded Land Cruiser eight-passenger luxury sport utility up 3.9 percent to 132.
For the year, Camry finished with a 20.9 percent increase to 30,975. The sporty Paseo 2+2 coupe rose 23.7 percent with 4,922 Southern California sales in 1992. Toyota pickup trucks, including T100, rose 2.0 percent to 27,240, including a 6.8 percent rise in two-wheel drive models to 21,248.
Toyota sold 110,505 total vehicles in Southern California in 1992, down 1.5 percent, with an increase of 8.7 percent in total sales to 9,494 in December and retained its position as the No. 1 selling nameplate for both car and truck in Southern California.
