PR NEWSWIRE TO SERVE FORMER USSR MEDIA
 UNDER EXCLUSIVE AGREEMENT WITH TASS
NEW YORK, June 1 /PRNewswire/ -- PR NEWSWIRE (PRN) today announced an exclusive agreement with TASS, the former Soviet Union's national news agency, to provide American companies and other PRN members with same-day electronic distribution of news releases to more than 1,000 points in Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).
Beginning today, coverage stretches beyond a roster of hundreds of daily and weekly newspapers -- there are 40 in Moscow alone -- to major government ministries and other decision-making bodies, industrial enterprises, financial institutions, databanks and the national wire services of each of the CIS republics as well as the Baltic nations, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia.
"On behalf of our members, we are enthusiastic about the broad reach of this network into all areas of the CIS," said Ian Capps, president of PR NEWSWIRE. "This new linkage will further strengthen PR NEWSWIRE's European and Asian services."
Among Moscow's 40 newspapers, "Arguementy & Infakty" is in the Guinness Book of Records with the world's largest circulation -- over 30 million. The newspaper emerged with Gorbachev and perestroika and has never been under government influence. "With American business and official interest in Russia and the CIS accelerating, this agreement will provide an effective vehicle to reach decision-makers and the public in the former Soviet Union," said David Steinberg, vice chairman of PR NEWSWIRE, who negotiated the agreement with Igor Y. Makurin, director of international business development in Moscow for TASS (now known as ITAR-TASS).
News releases from PR NEWSWIRE will be translated into Russian by TASS in Moscow and transmitted to Russia, Ukraine, Belorussia, Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Uzhbekistan, Kazekhstan, Kirgizia, Moldova, Turkmenistan, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. Major cities receiving PRN copy via TASS include Moscow, Kiev, Yalta, Kharkov, Baku, Alma-Ata, St. Petersburg, Minsk, Vilnius, Riga, Tashkent, Tbilisi and Vladivostok.
In addition to newspapers, wire services, radio and TV and trade and technical publications, PRN stories will be received electronically at news desks in national parliaments of the CIS, the Office of the President of the Russian Federation, the Foreign Ministry of Russia, the Russian Academy of Science (which houses the Institute of U.S. and Canadian Studies), as well as scores of newsletters reporting on agriculture, biology, medicine, ecology and other industrial and scientific topics.
The PRN rate to its members for each news release, including Russian translation, is $350 for up to 300 words.
PRN pioneered electronic distribution of news releases in 1954 and has been providing international services since 1960. PRN maintains 21 bureaus around the United States and with its affiliates around the globe is able to transmit releases to virtually any location required by its more than 15,000 clients.
