PPG TO EXIT COMMERCIAL GLASS PRODUCTS BUSINESS

PITTSBURGH, July 7 /PRNewswire/ -- PPG Industries (NYSE: PPG) announced today that it is exiting the commercial glass products business, which includes coated insulating window units and other glass units for office buildings and other commercial structures.
As a result of the decision, the company today informed state, local and union officials that it intends to close its plant at Ford City, Pa., where the products are made, by Sept. 6. PPG and the Aluminum, Brick and Glass Workers International Union (ABG) will conduct negotiations regarding the closing.
The Ford City plant, north of Pittsburgh, has not operated since employees represented by the ABG initiated a strike on May 14. The union represents about 300 of the facilities 360 employees.
Robert D. Duncan, group vice president, glass, emphasized that the decision is unrelated to the contract dispute. "The commercial glass products business has experienced a competitive disadvantage, especially from low-cost producers, and has not been profitable for many years," he said. "As we have said a number of times previously, this situation has placed the Ford City plant's future in jeopardy in recent years."
The Ford City plant began operations in 1888 as a manufacturing facility for plate glass. It was converted to a glass fabrication facility in the early 1970s as the more efficient float glass process replaced plate glass making.
