PPG REPORTS ON LABOR NEGOTIATIONS

PITTSBURGH, May 7 /PRNewswire/ -- PPG Industries (NYE: PPG) announced today that it would implement, at 12:01 a.m. tomorrow, terms of its final contract offer to the union local at its Greensburg, Pa., automotive replacement windshield plant. The action would end day-to-day extension of a contract that expired March 19.
PPG also confirmed receiving notification that other Aluminum, Brick and Glass Workers International Union locals intend to terminate, next Thursday night, day-to-day extensions of contracts at the Creighton, Pa., auto glass plant and Ford City, Pa., commercial glass products plant. Those contracts expired Feb. 16 and March 1, respectively.
"We are disappointed negotiations reached an impasse with the Greensburg local," said Frank A. Archinaco, vice president of automotive and aircraft products. "We have had numerous meetings since March 15. Last Friday, at the international union's request, we agreed to delay the May 1 final offer implementation in an extra effort to reach a settlement.
"We understand that our employees have had no opportunity to vote on our final contract offer, which is also a disappointment," Archinaco continued. "We strongly recommend to the union that the company's offer be put to a secret vote by all employees.
"Although we are at an impasse, we remain in contact with the union and available to meet at its request," he added. Issues include healthcare benefits, wages and pensions.
"We have continued to explain our concern about the competitiveness of the Greensburg plant, which has had to be operated at reduced levels for the past year," he said.
Regarding the potential for a work stoppage at the Greensburg plant, Archinaco said PPG "will utilize various options to assure service to our customers, and to minimize effects on PPG and the jobs of our people."
