POWERSOFT ANNOUNCES SUPPORT FOR APPLE COMPUTER'S VITAL PROGRAM
BURLINGTON, Mass., Nov. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Powersoft Corporation announced today its participation as an independent software vendor (ISV) in Apple Computer's VITAL (Virtually Integrated Technical Architecture Lifecycle) client/server program. The announcement was made yesterday by Apple Computer, Inc. at the MacIS meeting in New Orleans.
According to Powersoft President David Litwack, Powersoft will port PowerBuilder, its object-oriented client/server application development tool, to the Macintosh platform in response to market demand. "Heterogeneous computing environments are the norm within the Fortune 1000 today, and Macintosh is gaining rapid momentum and broad acceptance as a popular business desktop platform with end-users and MIS," said Litwack. "Our decision to extend PowerBuilder to the Mac is in direct response to the expressed needs of our customer base. Powersoft's policy is to support cross-platform GUI environments that are critical to the success of corporate client/server architectures."
Powersoft's ISV relationship with Apple Computer is a further strategic element of Powersoft's CODE (Client/Server Open Development Environment). Other recent CODE announcements include vendor- complementary relationships with Microsoft Corp. to support its Windows NT operating system and ODBC database connectivity API; and with CASE vendors Bachman and LBMS to provide client/server interfaces for each companies' respective I-CASE products.
CODE is Powersoft's framework for enriching the product capabilities and market breadth of PowerBuilder, the company's object-oriented client-server application development tool. CODE stipulates an open end-user environment through vendor support of standard or published APIs in contrast to vendor-proprietary product architectures.
Apple Computer's VITAL is the company's model for creating integrated enterprise information systems. Cross-platform client/server application development capabilities at the corporate level are an integral component of VITAL, in which Powersoft's PowerBuilder will be a primary solution.
Powersoft is a privately held company that develops and markets PowerBuilder, the object-oriented client/server development system for mission-critical Windows applications. As of Oct. 15, PowerBuilder was in use at 1,700 corporate sites for the development and deployment of client/server applications.
Headquartered in Burlington, Mass., Powersoft has eight offices in the United States, European headquarters in the U.K., and 20 appointed distributors throughout North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Australia, and the Pacific Rim. Primary venture investors include Burr, Egan, Deleage & Co., Boston; Hummer, Winblad Venture Partners, Emeryville, Calif.; and Claflin Capital Management, Boston.
