POWERSOFT AND NOVELL ANNOUNCE DEVELOPMENT AND MARKETING RELATIONSHIP

Powersoft to Develop PowerBuilder Library for NetWare and
Interface Technology to Btrieve and NetWare SQL
BURLINGTON, Mass., Feb. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Powersoft Corp. (NASDAQ: PWRS) and Novell Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: NOVL) today announced a joint development and marketing agreement, which will include a Powersoft-developed PowerBuilder Library for NetWare, Novell's network operating system.
PowerBuilder is Powersoft's object-oriented development tool for client/server computing environments. Powersoft will develop interfaces to access Novell's Btrieve record management engine and NetWare SQL relational database engine through an Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) driver.
Application developers in the NetWare environment will use PowerBuilder Library for NetWare to simplify the development of many routine and network-level functions, in an object-oriented, Windows point-and-click manner. By making NetWare tools and services more generally accessible to developers, the PowerBuilder Library will help eliminate the learning curves often associated with building NetWare- integrated applications. PowerBuilder Library for NetWare will support both NetWare 3.11 and the soon-to-be-released NetWare 4.0, and is expected to ship by the end of Q3, 1993.
"The PowerBuilder Library for NetWare will give application developers a high-level, object-based interface to NetWare services, which will make it much easier and faster for them to build applications that take advantage of NetWare's powerful functionality," said Bill Critch, Powersoft director of business and alliance programs. "Currently, application developers must understand both C programming and the Windows SDK in order to fully utilize NetWare tools and services. By providing developers with an object library for NetWare's network-level functions and simplified access to routine services, the PowerBuilder Library will help move support for NetWare into the mainstream of application development."
"The developer community has been requesting more flexible and easy- to-use tools for developing applications for the NetWare environment," said Willie Tejada, director of developer relations for Novell. "This agreement with Powersoft is one of the significant steps that Novell has taken to fulfill this need. Specifically, PowerBuilder Library for NetWare will free developers from much of the low-level network programming associated with accessing NetWare services and allow them to concentrate on building more powerful applications."
 PowerBuilder Technology Supporting NetWare
Under the agreement, Powersoft will develop a standalone PowerBuilder Library, composed of a set of PowerScript functions and custom user objects that are bundled into a .PBL file. PowerScript is PowerBuilder's high-level, graphical object-oriented language. PowerBuilder Library for NetWare will allow developers to encapsulate NetWare functionality so that the host .PBL file can be added to an application's library list and be readily available for use by the application. The PowerBuilder Library will support NetWare's directory, print and communications services.
Powersoft also will develop a high-level interface to Novell's database engines, Btrieve and NetWare SQL. Powersoft is constructing the interface using Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) technology, to make it easier for developers to build database access into their applications. ODBC is a Microsoft Windows API that provides a standard method for client-based application development systems to access data stored in ODBC-compliant relational databases. The interface is now in the beta phase of development.
PowerBuilder Library for NetWare will be demonstrated in Novell's Booth No. 824 at the Software Developer's Conference being held Feb. 23-26 in Santa Clara, Calif.
Support for NetWare is an example of Powersoft's Client/Server Open Development Environment (CODE), which is the company's overall technology plan to strengthen its leadership position in the client/server application development market. Complimentary relationships -- such as those with Novell -- illustrate the essence of Powersoft's CODE as an open systems plan for Powersoft to support major technologies and vendors of the client/server market.
Powersoft Corp. develops and markets the object-oriented PowerBuilder client/server development system for mission-critical applications, PowerBuilder is used at more than 2,200 customer sites for the development and deployment of client/server applications. Headquartered in Burlington, Powersoft has nine offices in the United States, European headquarters in the U.K., and 33 appointed distributors throughout North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Australia and Asia.
