POWERBOOK USERS GET WIRELESS FREE TRIAL OF EMBARC
BOYNTON BEACH, Fla., Jan. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) has announced it will offer all PowerBook users attending MACWORLD Expo in San Francisco a 30-day, free trial use of EMBARC, its nationwide wireless electronic mail and information service. MACWORLD Expo, Jan. 6-9, marks the official launch of the new EMBARC software for Macintosh-based computers. Participants in the trial offer can bring their PowerBook computers to Motorola booth #2721 to receive immediate, free service. "We want PowerBook users to experience the benefits of wireless communications first-hand," said Steve Brendle, EMBARC vice president and general manager. "Through the free trial, they can learn how EMBARC allows true mobile computing with the PowerBook, without the limitations of phone lines. For businesses with mobile workers, EMBARC is a cost- effective, time-efficient communications solution." EMBARC (Electronic Mail Broadcast to A Roaming Computer) is based on paging technology which gives the service its wide broadcast capability and reliable message delivery in buildings and on the road. This technology allows an e-mail user to send information to a hundred or a thousand recipients at one time in more than 200 cities for the cost of a single message. Messages are delivered by radio signal to recipients' pocket-sized NewsStream receivers. This Motorola-made receiver has a"long battery life and can store up to 56 messages. Recipients can download information from the receiver to their portable computers at their convenience. EMBARC is widely accessible to public e-mail users through a series of interconnect agreements. Currently, subscribers to GE BusinessTalk, IBM Mail Exchange (Advantis) and SprintMail can send information over the EMBARC system. MACWORLD attendees can bring their PowerBook computers to EMBARC's booth #2721 in the South Hall of the Moscone Center at MACWORLD Expo, where they will be asked to provide a credit card number as a deposit for the EMBARC hardware and software. If participants wish to continue their EMBARC service after the 30-day trial, they will be billed $395 for the hardware and software package.
Subsequent monthly service fees will vary depending upon service use. Per message charges are borne by sender not receiver of messages.
During the 30-day period, participants will receive: -- Free activation and use of a NewsStream receiver to send and receive wireless messages for 30 days; -- MACWORLD Expo wireless news service -- broadcast updates on show news and events exclusively for EMBARC users during the show; -- Free subscription to USA TODAY news briefs, weather briefs and updates; -- Free reception of Individual Inc.'s HeadsUp news briefs -- Apple Computer Watch.
