HOLYOKE, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 6, 1999--

Attention Broadcast News Editors:

A Power Warning has been issued by ISO New England and the electricity companies of New England. Please broadcast the message below immediately. Your assistance is appreciated. For additional information, contact the individuals listed below.

POWER WARNING DECLARED -- URGENT APPEAL FOR CUSTOMERS TO CONSERVE ELECTRICITY

A POWER WARNING HAS BEEN DECLARED FOR NEW ENGLAND TODAY, JULY 6TH BEGINNING AT 5:00 A.M. AND IS EXPECTED TO REMAIN IN EFFECT THROUGH THIS EVENING. ELECTRICITY DEMAND ACROSS THE REGION IS EXPECTED TO BE AT RECORD LEVELS DUE TO THE EXTREMELY HIGH TEMPERATURES AND HUMIDITY. ISO NEW ENGLAND, THE OPERATOR OF THE REGION'S POWER GRID, AND THE ELECTRICITY COMPANIES OF NEW ENGLAND, ARE URGING CUSTOMERS TO TAKE STEPS TO MINIMIZE THE USE OF ELECTRICITY THROUGHOUT THE DAY.

RESIDENTIAL CUSTOMERS ARE REQUESTED TO TURN OFF UNNECESSARY LIGHTS AND APPLIANCES AND DEFER ACTIVITIES SUCH AS LAUNDRY UNTIL AFTER 8:00 P.M.

CUSTOMERS WHO NEED AIR CONDITIONING FOR HEALTH AND SAFETY REASONS SHOULD NOT RESTRICT ITS USE.

BUSINESSES ARE URGED TO SHUT OFF ALL UNNECESSARY LIGHTS, TURN OFF OFFICE EQUIPMENT WHEN NOT IN USE, AND TURN UP THE THERMOSTAT FOR AIR CONDITIONING.

TAKING THESE STEPS ARE CRITICAL IN PROTECTING THE REGION'S ELECTRICITY SYSTEM.
