POWER PULLS DAKOTA TO SALES PLATEAU

POWER PULLS DAKOTA TO SALES PLATEAU
HIGHLAND PARK, Mich., April 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Dodge Dakota pickup

sales literally powered their way to the half-million sales plateau today.
Introduction of Magnum V-6 and V-8 engines for 1992 is a key reason model year sales of 55,153 are running at their highest rate since Dakota's debut in June 1986, Chrysler Corporation reported.
Dakota's unique Magnum horsepower, combination of club cab seating and carrying capacity of larger pickups, and its maneuverability, fuel economy and low price comparable to smaller trucks, explains why sales are up nearly 60 percent this year. And why Dakota market share jumped 4.0 points from a year ago to more than 12 percent of the small pickup segment.
The Club Cab also is a popular feature, accounting for more than 50 percent of sales.
"Dakota is hot," said Dodge marketing executive Mike Clement. "And the hottest model (one out of every five Dakota sales) is the Dakota Sport V-6, well-equipped at a list price of $9,995 less a $750 consumer rebate."
 Dakota U.S. sales by calendar year: 1986--29,045; '87--99,045; '88--93,396; '89--89,294; '90--74,812; '91--82,336; '92 (Jan. l-Apr.15)--32,072.
