POWER AUTHORITY BACKS TWO ENTRIES IN ALBANY-BOSTON ELECTRIC CAR RACE
ALBANY, N.Y., May 15 /PRNewswire/ -- The traditional call of "Gentlemen, start your engines" will be missing here Monday (May 18) when about 40 vehicles, including two sponsored by the New York Power Authority, set off on a five-day, 250-mile race to Boston.
The American Tour de Sol will start not with the roar of engines, but with the hum and whine of electric motors.
Power Authority Chairman Richard M. Flynn said he wasn't looking to expand into the auto business, but wanted to capitalize on the opportunity to show the public how much progress has been made in developing electric-powered vehicles.
"Events like this provide tangible proof that the future is bright for electric vehicles," said Flynn, who noted that the Power Authority has helped finance purchase of electric-powered vans by the cities of New York and White Plains.
"This is a great opportunity to demonstrate the practical application of advanced electric technology," he said.
The two vehicles carrying Power Authority logos represent a broad spectrum of that technology. One is a battery-powered conversion of a conventional Chevrolet S-10 pick-up truck. It was produced by the Solar Car Corp. of Melbourne, Fla. The company is a commercial venture with aspirations of becoming a major producer of electric-powered vehicles. The company's direct-current motors are built by Advanced D.C. Motors Inc. of Syracuse.
The second Power Authority-sponsored vehicle is a three-wheeled experimental car that was hand-built by science students in the Cato- Meridian Central School District in Cayuga County.
Developed, constructed and refined over the past several years, the Cato-Meridian car -- known as the Sunpacer -- is one of only two vehicles built by high school students that qualified for the race. It won the spot by capturing third place in the 1991 New York State Student Energy competition.
The car, built under the direction of technology teacher Earl Billings, features six solar panels that add energy to the batteries so they last longer when the car is in use. The solar panels also help recharge the batteries when the car is parked in the sun.
The 1992 American Tour de Sol gets under way Sunday (May 17) in Albany at the Nelson A. Rockefeller Empire State Plaza where the cars entered in the race will be on display throughout the day. Pre-race technical testing will be conducted between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.
On Monday, opening ceremonies at the plaza will begin at noon, with the first leg of the race scheduled to start at 1 p.m. The cars will go as far as Great Barrington, Mass. on the first day. The remaining legs of the race include: Tuesday, Great Barrington to Avon, Conn.; Wednesday, Avon to Hartford to Storrs, Conn.; Thursday, Storrs to Thompson, Conn.; Friday, Thompson to Museum of Transportation, Brookline, Mass. A dinner and the awards ceremony will be held at the Museum of Transportation on Friday evening.
Winners will be determined by the aggregate time it takes to cover the specified distances, with bonus miles awarded for additional daily laps that demonstrate a car's ability to go farther than the required distance. Failure to meet the day's target or rules infractions will result in penalties.
The cars will be driven the following day from Brookline to downtown Boston, where they will be on display.
