Caption: POW -- The Defense Ministry Tuesday unveiled what it said is a new production line to turn out the Mesbah (Lantern) anti-aircraft artillery. The weapon can shoot down planes but appears to have been designed chiefly to try to knock down American Tomahawk cruise missiles that were the heart of the U.S. air attacks on Iraq at the start of the 1991 and 2003 wars. Iran assumes that if the United States ever attacks its nuclear installations, the Tomahawk would be the weapon of choice. The Mesbah was described as able to pour out 4,000 shells per minute, the same rate of fire as a similar American weapon.
