POULTRY DISEASE EMERGENCY PROCLAMATION

RICHMOND, Va., Feb. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Because of the presence of Avian Influenza (AI) in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York, the Office of the State Veterinarian has imposed a limited embargo prohibiting the movement of live poultry to or from those states for live birds shown at exhibition and live birds sold at exhibition or markets.
Avian Influenza is an infectious and contagious poultry disease which is not transmissible to humans. Among poultry, it is transmitted primarily when diseased birds are congregated and co-mingled with healthy birds. Human traffic between poultry houses and farms can spread the disease by carrying material in shoes or clothing.
Dr. William Sims, State Veterinarian, has issued a Poultry Disease Emergency Proclamation and has urged all poultry companies to limit fleet and other vehicle traffic to and from Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York as much as possible and to remain completely away from live bird markets. He also stressed the need for increased bio-security through intensified cleanliness, and has asked poultry companies to heighten precautionary measures such as cleaning and disinfecting vehicles that must travel to the affected areas prior to their return to Virginia.
The embargo is in effect for 90 days from Feb. 1, 1993.
