POST OFFICE TO OFFER SANTA'S LETTERS TO PUBLIC

POST OFFICE TO OFFER SANTA'S LETTERS TO PUBLIC
EVENT: The New York Post Office will kick off its annual "Operation

Santa Claus" program to invite the public to come in, write or telephone for one of the thousands of letters that are written to Santa by many needy children and adults. Santa Claus will join New York Postmaster John F. Kelly in announcing the program and then remain in the post office lobby to greet children and hear their holiday wishes.
 DATE: Monday, Dec. 2
 TIME: 10:30 a.m.
LOCATION: James A. Farley Building (Manhattan General Post Office)
421 Eighth Avenue (at 33rd Street)
 Room 3018 (third floor)
BACKGROUND: Operation Santa Claus was established more than 60 years ago. In this time, it has helped provide that basics to many needy children and adults. It has thousands of success stories, including helping a toddler get eye surgery, providing heat to a poor family, and reuniting a grandmother and grandson. The list goes on and on.
In 1990, nearly 26,000 letters were received from all over the world. The post office sent out nearly 10,000 in response to telephone and written requests. The remainder were taken by those who chose to go to the post office and personally select a letter.
Operation Santa Claus is the largest program of its kind in the country.
