PORTAGE COUNTY, BFIO REACH AGREEMENT OVER LANDFILL PERMIT

COLUMBUS, Ohio, Feb. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- After months of discussion, Browning-Ferris Industries of Ohio (BFIO) announced today that it has reached an agreement with several public entities in Portage County. The agreement settles a host of environmental concerns expressed by local officials for the BFIO Willowcreek Landfill located in Atwater Township, clears the way for the issuance of a new landfill permit for the site and also establishes a working relationship with the district which will allow BFIO to pursue a long-term expansion.
The current landfill plan submitted to the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency calls for the closure of the sites' old mound and the development of two new sections for future disposal. If the permit is approved, the site will have three full years of disposal. In the interim, the agreement will also allow BFIO to continue to pursue a permit for an expansion of the Willowcreek Landfill site that could possibly service the Portage County community for at least the next 10 years.
The following list represents the highlights of the agreement. BFIO agrees:
-- To provide guaranteed disposal space for the Portage County community for the duration of landfill operations.
-- To use best available technology as defined by Ohio law.
-- To perform an environmental landfill assessment of the existing landfill.
-- To employ dispute resolution mechanisms to settle any agreement implementation difficulties.
-- To set up a county oversight fund to be paid out ove. G?d.?( -- To pr ide assistance to neighboring property owners to insure safe water supplies.
-- To provide the Portage County Health Department with an annual sum for well testing, special waste testing and other programs.
In turn, the Portage County Board of Commissioners, Board of Health and Board of Trustees agree to drop their opposition to the issuance of a landfill permit currently pending before the OEPA and to establish a long-term working relationship with BFIO.
"This agreement embodies a large commitment on behalf of BFIO and the community of Portage County. We (BFIO) believe that public-private partnerships are absolutely crucial in the solid waste business. This agreement marks months of positive dialogue with public officials in the area, we look forward to a positive working relationship with the community in the future," said Mike Heher, BFIO division manager.
"Statewide, BFIO has entered into similar public-private partnerships where we operate landfill sites. They are important to our host communities and it allows us to service other Ohio communities with safe environmentally sound disposal," Heher continued.
